There are so many things that can cause us to stress out EVERY day. Work, some lifestyles, having children, and of course COVID-19. Stress can be healthy for the individual, but not in excessive amounts.
Sometimes we need to realise that we are stressed and sit back and work out a way to de-stress and relax. Easier said than done, when you have a toddler.
Here are a few of my ideas to help you de-stress in a way that is achievable and approachable when you have a busy lifestyle and find you can be stressed a lot.
1. Take Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a great way to help you de-stress, by helping your body regulate the chemicals involved in anxiety and depression, like adrenaline, serotonin, and even dopamine. What’s even better is that it’s also good for your muscle and bone health.
2. Have a laugh
Stress can effect our bodies and mood, which causes headaches, insomnia, and decreased productivity. If you are feeling stressed try meeting up with some friends or family and have a laugh. Or put a comedy on and feel your stress levels decrease. What’s more, meeting up with friends and family can also help to reduce anxiety which makes you feel much better all over.
3. Smile through it
This one is something I have always been told. I don’t find that this works for me, however I do know many who this really does work for.
The thought process behind this idea is that a smile can cause a psychological effect by engaging your brain into thinking happy. Therefore you end up feeling happy because you have been smiling.
Deep breathing and slowing your breathing down can help you to turn off the “fight or flight” mode and relax a little more. Try doing this with some meditation or yoga, as this really helps to relax your body and mind alike.
Writing our thoughts down can help us to get our problems off our chest, and make sense of the way we are feeling.
Writing some gratitude memos is also a good practise to help us unwind. With writing it is really easy to get lost in the world we create, and even better you don’t have to share anything which you write, it can stay completely private.
6. Art therapy
Crafts such as colouring or sewing, or making something from nothing is a really good way to take your mind off your demons and relax just a little bit.
Colouring has been proven to be a really good source of mindfulness, and for me I find cross stitch or crochet to be a good escape from the world around me, allowing me to relax.
7. Eat Bananas
Bananas are high in potassium which helps to regulate our blood pressure, and when we are stressed our blood pressure tends to be quite high.
Chronic stress can also tire us out and bananas are a great way of boosting our energy.
8. Light a Candle or Melt some Wax
Scented candles and Wax Melts are a really good way to let our minds switch off and relax just a little bit.
There is a reason Aromatherapy has been used for centuries as a cure for so many things.
Lavender is a great scent to help relieve anxiety and stress
Rubbing and applying pressure between your knuckles of your index and middle fingers helps to give you an almost immediate sense of relaxation.
I know right!
When I am feeling super stressed I don’t want to even think about doing the house work, however, the repetitive motion which housework involves can actually help to sooth our brain and boost mental health.
So there you have it. My top 10 ways to De-Stress when you are super stressed. You don’t have to try all of these, or any at all, these are just the things that I have done and have found work for me when I am super stressed with my day-to-day life, and especially my part time job.
Is there anything else you can think of that I may have forgotten, or perhaps something that you do that helps you to de-stress?
